Quantum Optics of Correlated Materials at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, led by Prof. Daniel G. Suárez-Forero
August 25, 2025
After working at Hafezi group in JQI for three years, and spending one year at the University of Geneva in Switzerland, our former member Daniel Suárez has started a new research group at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC).
Daniel G. Suarez-Forero joined the Hafezi Group in 2021 as an experimental postdoctoral scholar and was instrumental in many experimental results, including Observation of Topological Combs and Chiral flat-band optical cavity with atomically thin mirrors, among many others.
Dr. Suarez's new team at UMBC will investigate solid state systems in which the electronic interactions are much stronger than in conventional materials. He looks forward to finding and manipulating novel states of matter using opto-electronic techniques. A dilution refrigerator with a 12 Tesla magnet is coming in February and the lab will feature two fully equipped optical setups for cryogenic spectroscopy. PhD positions are available, and the group is currently recruiting talented candidates looking to join the group as postdoctoral researchers.
